Well, most adults seem to recognize the original meaning of the phrase “Hand Job.”
I recently purchased a radio ad. At first the person I was talking to had no red flags on the event name, but it was later said that saying “Hand” + “Job” was not decent to say on the radio out of fear of FCC fines. Neither word is “dirty” to me.
- “Hand,” is a body part that most people have two of, as is typically publicly displayed; occasionally it is gloved, but that is a temperature control technique and not out of fears of being indecent.
- “Job,” is a task or unit of work. Hence, people typically want a ‘career’ and not just a ‘job.’
I do feel a bit like I am in a bizzaro world, where I have to explain when I say “meat,” that I mean,”animal flesh.”
I had to explain to my father how this phrase could be mis-interpreted. I also had to explain to a non-American English speaker about this phrase, so that they could be prepared for any commentary when promoting my event. I do believe the phrase in it’s original context is still in-use today but I fully understand the slang version is out there too.
I recently got two vary different responses when requesting that the dictionaries out their update their definitions of “hand job,” to also include the original definition, not just the slang definition.
One response was that the phrase was “too self-explainatory to merit being defined,” while the other response said the phrase, “was not common enough to merit such a definition.” I do admit, these reasons seem confusing.
In light of this, I am on a mission to collect samples of the phrase “Hand Job” from the wild, in line with the original context. I will then submit these to the dictionary websites for appeal.
