So, this happened about a month ago now but I am still stewing over it. I would like to move on, perhaps this post will help.
I’ve gone to the Freebirds near my work over 3 years. There was a 9 month hiatus, where I just couldn’t get myself to eat there again after they served chicken in my vegan bowl; eventually I went back.
The employees all recognize me. I was even foolish enough to think of a few as friends, what with their sincerity of asking how it was going or history of the “not libra” tatoo of an employee.
In my efforts to promote this event, I wanted to go with what I knew. Since I ate at Freebirds every week and saw the community board, I wanted to peg my event flyer there too. I put up a small stack of flyers. The next week, I saw the flyers were gone. I asked one of the employees if they were thrown away or if people were taking them. That one employee said people were taking them. I happily put more on the board.
The next week, I saw the larger stack of flyers were gone. I asked a different employee if the flyers were thrown away or being taken. (Flyers are expensive.) This person said they were thrown away. She said ,”it was clever, but we can’t have that kind of stuff here.”
This really hurt me. They all knew me and I go back like clock work every week. They could have saved my flyers instead of throwing them away.
Furthermore, there really is nothing wrong with the name hand job in the context of a handmade only arts and crafts event. I am using the phrase in the original context. If they are going to be a gatekeeper based on what is moral, they can’t rightfully sell beyond “meat,” as meat is sometimes used too reference a penis.
The Freebirds brand is about being a free spirited rebel but that is a falsehood. They are just a corporation looking to make money off of this story.
Each time I have gone back, the food just doesn’t taste good anymore. I’m not sure if I will go back.
What hurt me today is that where my flyers used to display, a Comic-Con flyer is pegged up, with the same clip that I used. That is a huge event that had a ton of money. My event is small and fully funded by myself. I don’t think comic con needs free advertising.
It makes me realize, Freebirds is a corporation, not interested in serving the community, but using the community board to appear more like a local business. They just want to funnel the local money to the main corporate offices.
I really hate talking to this person who said my stuff was indecent. Today, she served me food. I didn’t even order my food the way I like it because I was too distracted being mad at her and the new, manager approved (because they had my clip), Comic-Con flyer.
